My Life as a Detroit News Producer
Dec 08, 2024As I sit down to write this post, I can hardly believe that my time at Fox 2 News WJBK has come to an end. For 17 years, I worked as a news producer, honing my skills, building my network, and making a difference in the lives of viewers across the Detroit area. And for 12 of those years, I had the privilege of leading the team behind The Nine, Detroit’s #1 morning show program.
The Nine is a unique program, a hybrid of news and lifestyle with a talk show feel. As the lead producer, I oversaw a big team, booked guests for interviews, coaching talent, and helped business owners get their messages across on TV. I trained producers and interns, wrote scripts, built graphics, shot videos, edited, interviewed people, and told compelling stories that resonated with viewers.
Looking back on those years, I realize that being a TV producer was more than just a job for me. It was a calling, a passion, a way of life. I loved the thrill of the breaking news, the adrenaline rush of the live shot, and the satisfaction of delivering a story that mattered to people. But most of all, I loved the people I worked with and the viewers we served. They inspired me, challenged me, and made me a better person.
So why did I leave the news business? The answer is simple: family. In 2019, my husband and I decided to become foster parents, and our lives changed forever. Suddenly, there were many schedules to juggle, many needs to meet, and many hearts to care for. And while being a news producer was an amazing experience, it wasn’t the most flexible job in the world. I needed to find a way to balance my passion for storytelling with my commitment to my family.
That’s when I realized that my skills and expertise as a TV producer could translate into a new career as a media consultant and PR specialist. After all, being a producer is all about understanding how to tell a story effectively, how to build relationships with sources and audiences, how to work under extreme stress, and how to juggle multiple tasks and responsibilities. These are all skills that are invaluable in the world of media and communications.
As a media consultant and PR specialist, I can bring my experience and insights to help clients achieve their goals and tell their stories effectively. Whether it’s coaching executives on media relations, crafting compelling narratives, building social media campaigns, or training teams on communication strategy, I have the skills and expertise to guide you every step of the way.
And as a former news producer, I bring a personal touch to my work that sets me apart from other consultants. I know what it’s like to be in the trenches, to face deadlines and breaking news, to work long hours and weekends. I know how to build a team, motivate talent, and connect with audiences. And I know how to tell a story that resonates with people.
So if you’re looking for a media consultant or PR specialist who knows how to get the job done and cares about your success, look no further. Let’s work together to achieve your goals and tell your story to the world.
